your donation. Call 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish).

The American Red Cross is urging North Texans to remember a few important flash flood
safety
tips:

What to do during a Flood Watch or Warning:

*        Be alert to signs of flooding.  Keep an eye on water levels in nearby rivers and
creeks.
Watch for water pooling in low-lying areas. If you live in a flood-prone area, be prepared
to
evacuate immediately.
*        Listen closely to local emergency and law enforcement officials.  If an evacuation is
necessary, pay attention to public announcements. Announcements may be made via
TV, radio or
mobile loudspeakers in the affected communities.
*        Listen continuously to local TV and radio.  This includes NOAA Weather Radio, or a
portable,
battery-powered radio or television for updated emergency information.
*             Locate your family disaster supply kit and check that your
flashlight and radio batteries are in proper working order

Important Safety Tips

*        Turn Around, Don’t Drown.  If you come upon a flooded area, stop, turn around
and go
another way.  Find higher ground.  Do not attempt to cross flooded areas.  As little as six
inches of
rapidly moving water can sweep you off your feet.
*        Never try to walk, swim, or play in flood water.  Often flood waters hide rapidly
moving
currents, deep areas and even submerged debris.
*        Never attempt to drive through flood waters. If you are in a vehicle that becomes
surrounded
with flood water, abandon it and seek higher ground.
*        Stay away from creek and stream banks in flooded areas.  Floods can cause rapid
soil
erosion causing unstable ground near floodwaters.

*      Do not drive around barricades. They are there for your safety.

*       Call the American Red Cross or visit www.redcross.org
<http://www.redcross.org/> for free information on preparing your family for any
emergency.

The American Red Cross reminds all those affected by recent floods to
prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions and help those in your
community remember these important, life-saving tips.
